What is the Bulk File Renamer?
The Bulk File Renamer is a free online tool that lets you rename many files at once entirely in your browser. Select or drop any number of files, configure your rename pattern — add prefixes or suffixes, find and replace text in filenames, apply sequential numbering, change case, clean up spaces, remove special characters, or stamp files with today's date — then download a ZIP archive containing all your renamed files. Nothing is ever uploaded to a server.
Features
Drag & Drop Upload
Drop any number of files onto the upload area or use the file picker. All file types are supported with no limit on the number of files you can rename at once.
Add Prefix & Suffix
Prepend or append any text to every filename — add a project code like client_ as a prefix or a version label like _v2 as a suffix across an entire batch.
Find & Replace
Locate a specific word or phrase in every filename and replace it with new text. Correct typos, swap product names, or strip unwanted substrings from all files at once.
Sequential Numbering
Number files in sequence with a configurable start number, digit padding (001, 0001), and a choice of appending or prepending the counter to each filename.
Case & Spacing
Convert filenames to lowercase, UPPERCASE, or Title Case. Replace spaces with dashes or underscores, remove them entirely, or strip special characters for clean, web-safe names.
Date Stamp & ZIP Download
Insert today's date (YYYY-MM-DD) as a prefix or suffix on every file, then download all renamed files in a single ZIP archive — ready to extract and use immediately.
How to Use
- Select your files. Drag and drop files onto the upload zone, or click Select Files. You can load as many files as needed in one batch.
- Configure rename options. In the Options panel, set any combination of prefix, suffix, find and replace, case, space handling, sequential numbering, and date stamp.
- Review the live preview. The preview table updates instantly as you change options, showing the original name next to the proposed new name for every file.
- Check for duplicates. If any two files would end up with the same new name, the tool highlights them in orange so you can adjust your settings before downloading.
- Download the ZIP. Click Download ZIP to package all renamed files into a single archive. Extract it and your files are ready under their new names.
- Reset if needed. Click Reset Options to clear all rename settings and preview, or Clear Files to load a different batch.
When Should You Use This Tool?
Use this bulk file renamer any time you need to apply a consistent naming convention across many files without renaming them one by one. Common situations include organizing photos after a shoot, normalizing filenames before a web deployment, adding a date or version stamp to deliverables, or cleaning up filenames exported from design tools that contain spaces and special characters.
Common Use Cases
- Add a client or project prefix to a batch of files before sending deliverables
- Remove spaces and special characters to make filenames web and URL safe
- Stamp exported assets with today's date for version tracking
- Number a series of images or audio files sequentially for ordered playback
- Convert all filenames to lowercase for consistent behavior across operating systems
- Find and replace a product code or old client name across dozens of filenames at once
FAQ
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser. Your files are never sent anywhere, so the tool is safe for confidential or proprietary files and works offline once the page has loaded.
How many files can I rename at once?
There is no hard limit. Performance depends on the number and total size of files, since all content must be read into memory to create the ZIP. Hundreds of typical files work without issue on modern devices.
Why does the tool download a ZIP instead of renaming files directly?
Browsers cannot modify files on your file system directly for security reasons. Downloading a ZIP is the standard browser-based approach — extract the archive and your files are renamed and ready to use.
Will the tool change file extensions?
No. All rename operations apply only to the base name of each file. The original extension (e.g. .jpg, .pdf, .mp3) is always preserved exactly as it was.
What happens if two files end up with the same new name?
The preview highlights duplicate new names in orange. Adjust your settings — for example, enable sequential numbering — to ensure unique names before downloading. The ZIP download also auto-suffixes duplicates to avoid overwriting files.
Can I combine multiple rename options at once?
Yes. Options are applied in a fixed pipeline: find and replace → remove special characters → space handling → case → prefix → suffix → sequential number → date stamp. Enable as many as you need simultaneously.
