What is the Document Converter?
The Document Converter is a free, browser-based tool that lets you convert between document formats without uploading anything to a server. Convert PDFs to text or images, combine images into PDFs, transform HTML or Markdown into downloadable PDF documents, and extract content from Word DOCX files — all processed locally on your device for maximum privacy.
Unlike cloud-based converters that require signup or send your files to third-party servers, this tool uses modern JavaScript libraries (PDF.js, jsPDF, Mammoth.js) running entirely in your browser. Your documents never leave your computer.
Supported Conversions
- PDF → Text: Extract all readable text content from any PDF document.
- PDF → DOCX: Convert PDF to an editable Word document with headings, bold, and italic preserved.
- PDF → Images: Render each PDF page as PNG, JPG, or WebP at configurable DPI (72–216).
- Images → PDF: Combine multiple images (PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP, GIF) into a single PDF with page size options.
- HTML → PDF: Convert HTML markup into a styled, downloadable PDF document.
- Markdown → PDF: Transform Markdown (headings, lists, code blocks, links) into a professionally formatted PDF.
- DOCX → HTML: Extract content from Microsoft Word .docx files as clean, semantic HTML.
Browser-Based Privacy
All conversions happen locally in your browser using JavaScript libraries. No data is uploaded to any server. This makes the tool safe for confidential documents, legal files, financial records, and personal content. You can even use it offline after the page loads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a file size limit?
There's no hard limit, but very large PDFs (100+ pages) or high-resolution images may be slow depending on your device's memory. For best results, keep files under 50MB.
Can I convert scanned PDFs (image-only PDFs)?
PDF to Text requires the PDF to contain actual text data. For scanned/image-only PDFs, use PDF to Images to export the pages, then use a separate OCR tool.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing happens in your browser. The external libraries (PDF.js, jsPDF, Mammoth.js) are loaded from CDNs but your document data never leaves your device.
